Who Should Enroll

Before Answering the question "Who should take this class?" We should ask and answer some other questions about women's self defense.

Everyone should know how to defend themselves

What is woman's self defense?

Women's Self defense is a LIFE SKILL just as CPR, First Aid, and Swimming. These are some of the most important skills that a woman can learn. Just like any of the commonly known skills you can make a good attempt at them when you are in the situation, but they don't come naturally to most of us no matter what rumors you have heard or what you have seen on TV. It is very hard to learn to swim when you have just fallen out of the boat. It can be done, but every swimming lesson you take and every hour that you practice prior that will make your chances of surviving better. Self-Defense skills work the same way. The more instruction, and practice the better.
What will I learn in class?

The goal of women's self defense training is not to learn to be a deadly fighting machine. Although you will learn how to protect yourself and fight for those you care about, the goal is to become more aware and more confident. These are the traits that will change your life and make it more enjoyable.
I'm to old, out of shape, I'm not very physical, I can't be a fighter can I?

Self-defense is not about the physical it is about the mental. It doesn't matter what shape you are in you always have options. In fact the worse physical shape you are in the more this class will help. If you are a perfect athlete and can run a 10K race without breaking a sweat then one of your best options is to just run and keep running; maybe the attacker can't catch you. But we are not all in that conditions so it is more important for us to know what other options we have.

I'm not afraid, I can take care of myself, it will never happen to me, Why should I worry?

7% of all college freshmen women will be sexually assaulted in the first 2 months of going to college. The most common weapons used to sexually assault teens are Drugs and Alcohol. These are used to incapacitate the victim so she can't fight back and has no idea what is happening to her.

The current average age of sexual assault victims 14 years old. But children as young as 8 are being seen on a regular basis by crisis workers. So it is never to soon to start teaching your child about self-defense.

The number one place for a rape to occur is NOT a dark ally or parking lot, or walking on a street in the middle of the night. It is in your own home. The place where you feel the safest is actually the place that it is easiest for a rapist to find you and keep you prisoner.

So when asked the question who should take this class? The answer is:

  • All girls and women (13 to 99 for drop-in classes, private group classes for those under 13)
  • Any woman who has ever been in a situation where she was worried for her safety
  • Any woman who has children or grandchildren she would like to be able to protect
  • Any woman who is going away to college or has a daughter going away to college
  • Any woman who is planning on ever taking a trip
  • Any woman who is ever home alone
  • Any woman who wants to live a better life because she is more confident knowing that no matter what the situation is she is not helpless

In each course, students will learn practical techniques for defending themselves in real-life situations. While these are not martial arts courses, the methods are based upon martial arts techniques.

Instructors practice techniques with students and construct circumstances during class in which to practice the learned techniques. Students are also encouraged to discuss situations and circumstances with the class to broaden the scope of learning techniques.

You will leave each course with more and more confidence and information to protect yourself with environmental, behavioral, verbal, and physical self-defense
