64% of women who reported being raped, physically assaulted, and/or stalked since age 18 were victimized by a current or former husband, cohabiting partner, boyfriend, or date.1

The percentage of rapes and/or attempted rapes that are reported to the police vary based on who you ask.

  • The FBI estimates that only 37% of all rapes are reported to the police.
  • U.S. Justice Department statistics report 26% of all rapes or attempted rapes are being reported to law enforcement officials.
  • The Department of Justice estimated in 2001 that 48% of all rapes and sexual assaults are reported to the police.

The National College Women Sexual Victimization Study estimated that between 1 in 4 and 1 in 5 college women experience completed or attempted rape during their college years.

Females ages 12 to 24 are at the greatest risk for experiencing a rape or sexual assault.2

More than half of all rapes of females occur before age 18, and of
these, 22% occur before age 12.3
